aerosmith's first ever morning show concert today, friday, november 2nd, 2012. from nbc news, this is "today" with matt lauer and savannah guthrie live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. and good morning. welcome to "today" on a friday morning. i'm matt lauer. >> good morning, everyone. i'm savannah guthrie. this has been a hard week around here, but it's nice to have something to smile about this morning. aerosmith here on the plaza. >> a confession, i walked outside a second ago as they were rehearsing to see steve tyler behind a microphotograph and joe perry walking up and down the stage. this is just a destruction. the death toll from sandy has risen to more than 90 people. there's a lot of talk about the situation in new york's staten island. it was very hard hit. now some residents there are

complaining they have been largely ignored by emergency officials. we'll get a live report from there straight ahead. >> meanwhile, gas is becoming harder and hearder to find all across this region, and when a station does have it, this is what happens. people lined up for blocks and blocks waiting for a chance to fill up their cars and also get much-needed fuel to power generators, and now there's a threat of a new storm which can only add to the headache. >> some of the gas lines we were told were two or three hours long so that's adding to fairwayed nerves. let's get right to al roker for more on the weather situation. al, good morning to you. >> yeah, this is just what we don't need, matt and savannah. good morning. a look again at the european model, the one that predicted sandy, of course. 8:00 tuesday we have something just off the coast of north carolina, and it makes its up way along the coast paralleling virginia wednesday morning and the delmarva peninsula by wednesday morning. it's up the new jersey

shoreline. look at the winds. bringing in the potential with 1 to 2 inches of more rain. wind gusts of 45 miles per hour and wet snow inland just along the new york and new jersey border. we're talking about wet snow mixing in. with the winds 45 miles per hour and already compromised beaches along new jersey and long island, waves of any consequence could cause big problems, and, again, the winds. this is not what we need, but, unfortunately, this is what we're looking at. it's not definite, but the models, both the european and american models, both agree that this is going to happen. it's just a matter of how strong the system is going to be. savannah? >> when you think about the fact, by the way, that they are also still going to be struggling to restore power to a lot of people, that may stop the work for a day that early in the week. >> to say nothing of the fact that it is election day in this country on tuesday. the forecastbviously not what millions of people still struggling in the wake of sandy want to hear. nbc's andrea canning is on new

york's staten island this morning where residents are still reeling. andrea, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. very sad and dire situation here. 19 people are now confirmed dead, and more are missing. i want to show you just how bad the devastation is. take a look at this boat. it was washed up on to a residential street from the ocean, and it's like this all along here with boats strewn out all over this road. masts tangled in power lines. it got so bad that a lot of boats reached people's front doorsteps. people in this community are frustrated and hungry, without power and supplies. it is just not a good scene here, and it's a scene playing out in communities all across this region affected by sandy. in sandy's cruel wake profound loss and increasing anger as the pain she's inflicted continues to grow. >> something has to be done immediately. >> reporter: across a swath of the ravaged northeast, families try to put the pieces back together, but it's not so easy,

and here in staten island they are desperate. >> we have bodies being removed up the block. we are devastated here. >> reporter: on thursday the death toll on staten island alone rose to 19 when the bodies of two young boys, ages 2 and 4, were recovered after being ripped from their mother's arms in the storm surge. residents here still without power or supplies. their furry bubbling, saying it's the forgotten borough. fema has come to help. >> we are the eyes and the ears for the state and federal coordinators. >> reporter: but it's simply too little too late, the burough president insists. >> people with big salaries out to be out there and i'm disappointed. >> reporter: in hoboken, new jersey, the national guard is handing out critical supplies but there, too, thousands are without power, heat, food, cash or medicine.

the line outside of cvs staggering, but lines are the new normal everywhere. >> i was in this line for about an hour. people, they are cutting in line. >> reporter: waiting for gas to char charge phones or just to get supplies. >> they are waiting on buses. >> reporter: it's a nightmare in new york city for some. despite limited subway and mass transit service up and running, it's a super slow go and thousands have to commute by foot. >> walked across the brooklyn bridge. >> in manhattan hundreds of thousands still in the dark, some cold and starving. >> people are dumpster diving and what they are going after is the food. >> reporter: it may be days before the power is back. >> over 100,000 power lines on ground. >> reporter: across new york's long island power is out and patience is running out. >> i don't have the transportation out of here. >> reporter: in toms river, new jersey, a high school is now a shelter. in westwarck, connecticut,

belongings remain strewn about. >> we need to get cleaned out. >> reporter: in west virginia the weight from sandy's heavy snow on monday has now collapsed roofs. the storm's wrath widespread and strong. >> no heat. we have no power. >> reporter: still, officials are encouraging. >> the good news is that there are a lot of people who want to help. >> reporter: but the grim reality, not so easy to swaggo, sandy's sting far and wide and getting back to normal means a new normal. >> in the cold and the dark. >> reporter: the recovery for many an uphill battle. >> you need to come here and help us. we need assistance, please. >> reporter: and some good news. top fema officials are coming here to staten island today as well as the department of homeland security, including secretary janet napolitano. matt, i know they said it's too little too late but this is attention they definitely need and deserve right now. >> andrea canning on staten island this morning, andrea, thank you very much. for more on the gridlock in the

street and anger over shortages of gas line we turn to nbc's kerry sanders high below bloomfield, new jersey, where drivers are lined up waiting for a chance to fill up. kerry, good morning to you. >> reporter: and it is a very long wait. good morning, matt. let me take you outside here. we're right off the garden state parkway, and can you see the folks who are line here at this gas station, but look how long that line snakes back. now, there are reports of some people in lines for three, four hours. there's one station where people started lining up at 5:00 p.m. yesterday and are still in line, but look at this. this line goes all the way down the garden state parkway. people waiting to get in to get gas line, so it is one heck of a long line. there has been frustration at some of the gas stations, as you can see. at this station they have police officers that are here to keep order. it is a very slow go, and many of the gas stations when people pull up are not allowing them to completely top off. they are restricting the amount of fuel that they can put on

their car so that they have enough supplies for other people. it looks like things are going to loosen up a little bit because there's going to be some more gasoline arriving. there you see, the station is orderly, but it is one heck of a long frustrating wait to fill up, matt. >> yeah. kerry, imagine if you wait three hours to get to a gas station and then told you can only buy four or five gallons of gas. that's not going to be an easy situation. kerry thank you. nbc's tom costello is down on the ground in ridgefield, new jersey, at a truck stop along the new jersey turnpike. tom, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, matt. i had to walk in because the line is so long. i walked a mile and a half into the live shot. behind me they got 30,000 gallons of gas last night and are expecting more today, but meanwhile a long day. and meantime, michael bloomberg's order is still standing. if you're driving into new york city, you have to have at least

three people in the car. >> don't be difficult, ma'am. >> reporter: in a region where people are already tired, hungry and fed up, no electricity, no subways, no water, this has got them fuming. commuters standing in line for hours to catch a bus. on the roads, mass gridlock and no gas. >> i hope i don't have to push it to the gas station. >> reporter: as many as 80% of the gas stations here have no gas or no power to pump gas. those that do have power are running out fast. the lines, stretching for miles. >> here in new jersey, it seems to be particularly bad. >> reporter: the line at this exxon station in cranford, new jersey, snaked for five blocks through a nearby neighborhood, and everywhere tempers are starting to flare. >> i was in this line for about an hour. people, they cutting in line at the other corner. >> should not be jumping the line. this is america. you've got to take your turn.

>> reporter: in ridgefield where they are only taking coach the emotos were desperate to gas up to make an appointment. >> reporter: in long island, another bumper to bumper line-to-taking up an entire lane of traffic n.brooklyn they wanted gas for their generators and in yonkers the mayor ordered gas rationing. cnbc's mary thompson covers the gas business. >> scenes like this all along the new jersey turnpike from new york all the way down to philadelphia. >> reporter: one big problem, two of the region's five refineries are offline or just starting to limp back to life and ships have been unable to get into the harbor to unload their fuel. >> the coast guard has been working to open up the harbor here and other harbors along the path of the storm so that fuel can begin to move to terminals. >> reporter: meanwhile, back in ridgefield. >> seven gas stations.

i was right within 20 cars. not looking too good for gas today. >> reporter: not looking too good. the hope is that once the delivery trucks get up and running and the mass transit system gets up and running that will take the pressure off these gas stations, but that won't happen overnight. matt, back to you. >> tom costole in new jersey with the gas situation. thank you very much. >> now to presidential politics. we'll give you a look at the state of the race. the election is just four days away now. we want to get a snapshot of the latest polls. we have a national poll that shows this race is about as close as you can get. just within a matter of point, but, of course, this is a race that will be decided in the battle grounds. >> let's take you through this, wisconsin, a marquette university law school poll shows the president with a wide lead there, 51% to 43%, but it's a dead heat in florida, according to a cbs news/"new york times"/quinnipiac university poll and out in ohio mitt romney trails by five points.

>> want to take a look at how it's playing in the battleground. the headline in the miami herald. group braced for legal showdown at the polls this. race is so tight some are already worried about possible recounts. campaigns sending lawyers. >> some other papers have it this way. "the denver post," ryan and ryan visits on tap for slight for colorado. the real struggle isn't for undecided. it's to make sure that registered voters get to the polls. >> "the wisconsin journal sentinel say obama and romney make change a key issue on stump. nbc's chuck todd joins us now. chuck, good morning to you. >> reporter: the polls close in ohio in 108 hours and between now at 7:30 p.m. tuesday night when the polls close, i don't know if an hour is going to go by without one of the two candidates for president or two candidates for vice president trekking through at least one town somewhere in the buckeye

state. >> i'm counting on you to make sure we will win. we can't lose. let's go vote! let's get this done. >> reporter: and the final chapter of the 2012 campaign has begun, and it's all come down to ohio which president obama and mitt romney will visit six separate times during the last days of this race. today president obama will spend the entire day in ohio but a look at the rest of his campaign schedule makes the buckeye state look like an airline hub for air force one with ohio stops every day through election day. for his part, mitt romney is not only focusing on ohio but hoping to win over wisconsin and looking to broaden the battleground map campaigning in pennsylvania on sunday and visiting new hampshire twice, the smallest swing state that may be edge in mr. romney's direction. in these frenetic final days both candidates are sharpening their closing arguments to voters, mr. obama arguing for another four year. >> after four years as president you know me by now.

you may not agree with every decision i've made. you may be frustrated at the pace of change, but you know what i believe. you know where i stand. >> reporter: mr. romney calling himself the agent of change. >> this is no time for small measures. this is time for real change and when i'm elected president on day one we'll bring real change to america! >> reporter: and as the hurricane sandy recovery effort continues, both candidates took time to mention the storm victims thursday. >> no democrats or republicans during a storm. they are just fellow americans. >> if you have a few extra dollars, send them along to the american red cross or to the salvation army or to other relief organizations, it can make a difference in the lives of our fellow citizens. >> reporter: mr. romney was then interrupted by a protester. >> what about climate, that's what brought this monster storm. >> usa! usa. >> reporter: in the center of the response, new york city

mayor michael bloomberg also suggested climate change may have been responsible for the storm, and he endorsed president obama tweeting this november vote for a president who will lead on climate change. it is worth noting bloomberg did have tough words for the president saying mr. obama embrace addy vicive and, quote, populist agenda during his first term, and by the way, matt and savannah, today is the last day some outside event could interrupt the presidential race. it's the final jobs report before tuesday. >> we'll be watching closely. chuck todd from washington. tom brokaw joins us, our nbc news special correspondent. >> good morning, matt. >> you always hear people talk about a possible october surprise. do you think this storm sandy could be an october surprise? >> well, we've had a series of them. the president not showing up for the first debate, benghazi and then this surprise. the storm was much larger than anybody thought that it might be two weeks ago, three weeks ago. >> how will it impact the race though? >> i don't know.

it's hard to say. i think that the endorsement by mayor bloomberg may not move the needle, for example, in colorado, but in ohio and in places where they are trying to get white men, they can say, look, this guy has got the endorsement of the mayor of new york. >> even though it wasn't a very warm hug. >> it wasn't a warm haug, but it was tough on romney about not being the guy that he was when he was governor of massachusetts. >> want to go back to sandy for a moment. its greatest impact has been in states like new jersey and new york. these aren't swing states. >> no, they are already in the column for the president. >> exactly. so do you think it won't have an impact on the overall election in. >> it's very hard to know. i was talking to one of the romney people the other day. they said we think this will go away by thursday, but on thursday, of course, you had all the pictures of governor christie and the president of the united states and the endorsement by mike bloomberg. how name packets out there it's hard to say. at this point from now number tuesday it's get out the vote, matt. it's the ground game. that's what really counts. >> let's talk about the images we're looking at right there.

this was wednesday, president obama and chris christie touring some of the devastated areas. yes, they came together for all the right reasons. chris christie was the keynote speaker at the republican convention. he's a key ally of mitt romney. did that image hurt the romney campaign? >> well, i'm sure that it cautioned a lot of angst backstage, and i'm sure that in the obama campaign the operatives were saying, yes, we've got chris christie at our side with these extraordinary images, but, again, both sides say we now know where the votes are. we know there are very few undecided. need to get them to polls and on time on tuesday. >> as they are working to get people to the polls, mitt romney is saying i'm the agent of change and president obama is saying you know me. you know what i'm standing for. how effective are the arguments? >> at this point i think everybody knows the arguments. i think that the country is ready to have this election over, matt, and they have pretty

much made up their minds. we'll see. governor romney today is going to have everybody but his third cousin in ohio with him. they will have an enormous push designed to get people motivated to get out at that time. the ground game everybody acknowledges president barack obama, which is being run out of chicago, is very sophisticated. they have identified their groups. they know how to get in touch with them so that's what we have to wait and see, and as chuck said earlier, when we get that jobs report today, if it spikes up sharply, that's what worries the obama people more than anything else at this point. >> if the unemployment number goes up. >> if it goes up sharply, then that's a big problem for them. if it stays about where it is, i think the country has become accustomed. this is a long slog, but if it goes up sharply, who knows. that's what makes presidential politics and tuesday night next week for all of us not only exciting but important for everyone to pay attention, and i do think that they are paying attention now. >> and it could be a long night. tom brokaw. >> not could be. let me just say one more thing.

that is a live look at staten island where we've been telling you this morning there is so much damage from sandy and a lot of frustrations. some residents say they have been flat out ignored in the wake of the storm, but on sunday it will also be the starting location for the new york city marathon. that's got a lot of people frustrated, angry. in a moment we'll talk to the congressman who represents that area. he is blasting the decision to go ahead with the event. it's a controversial decision. we'll talk about it coming up. inside studio 1 ak-. i'm savannah guthrie alongside matt lauer. >> following this story on social media, seems that

overwhelming responses against that decision. >> a lot of outrage about that. we'll get into that. >> if your home was damaged in stormont and want to get it fixed fast, how do you know who you can trust to do that all-important work? a warning to homeowners about unlicenses contractors we found patrolling very hard-hit neighborhoods. >> and as you know new jersey took a direct hit from this storm, and on thursday jon bon jovi viewed the destruction in his hometown firsthand. tonight he is part of nbc universal's live benefit for storm victims, along with some other fantastic performers from across the region and we'll catch up with john in just a moment. we want to begin the half hour with the controversial decision to still hold the new york city marathon. nbc's craig melvin is in central park with more. craig, good morning to you. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. that marathon, of course, winds its way through all five boroughs here in new york city and ends behind me here in central park. the park remains closed this morning. i spoke to a worker a short time ago, still cutting down damaged trees and clearing debris but

the preparations continued. as you mentioned, the race will go on. that decision has some wondering how and others wondering why. sandy knocked out power for millions, flooded tunnels and shut down subways, but the massive and deadly storm that's crippled the city won't stop its marathon. >> it's a bold move. it's a move that, as you know, does not come without some controversially. >> and off they go. >> reporter: for nearly 50,000 registered runners the race to the finish may prove easier than a journey to the start. >> i assume if the marathon is going to happen, they are going to have ways to get people out there. >> reporter: starting line is on staten island and marathoners usually take a ferry or bus through the brooklyn battery tunnel. staten island itself remains in disarray, and the decision to go forward with the marathon has many local officials furious. >> the city of new york right now is talking about getting water out of the battery tunnel and preparing for a marathon. we're pulling bodies out of

water. >> reporter: and there are runners like louise who came all the way from down under. >> i'm here with my son and my husband is stuck in the uk so whether or not he gets here we're not sure. >> reporter: 20,000 marathoners flying here from all over the world and while new york city streets are now opened they are backlogged because of cancelled flights. >> and thousands of runners and their families crowding already packed hotels. on thursday, mary whitenberg, ceo and president of the group that organizes the marathon, defended the decision to matt. >> the idea is come sunday to bring the city together and help the world unite to really support this relief effort. >> reporter: and the race supports the new york city economy, generating about $350 million for the big apple every year. it also requires major support from city departments, but mayor bloomberg promised it won't distract from recovery efforts. >> the marathon is not going to redirect any focus.

keep in mind by sunday we'll have electricity back downtown, that will free up an enormous number of police. >> reporter: new york city has always had a reputation as one tough town and now having survived some of mother nature's worse they are bracing to be ready for one of the biggest running event in the world. >> they said that they are going to be retrofitting the station so that everyone can get there. i'm sure they will figure it out. >> reporter: this morning 14 of the city's 23 subway lines are open and running again. the mayor says he expects more if not all to be up and running by sunday. race organizers say they will be using private buses to get runners to the starting line, but for many this is not about logistics, it's about optics. savannah? >> craig melvin at central park, thank you. congressman michael grim represents the borough of staten island and scott stringer is the staten island president. you are right there in staten island, an area so hard hit.

reactions to this border from frustration, to bewilderment and rage, and i detect from you you feel some rage about this decision. >> well, there's no question i'm angry about it, and i'm exoegt sentiments of all the people i'm visiting on a regular basis. like three different groups of people here on staten island, those that are still grieving their loved ones, their friends and their neighbors for lives that we lost. those that don't know where friends, neighbors, family members, are they are displaced. we don't even know their status and there's a good chance death tolls can still rise, and then there are those that are literally walking the street and they seem almost hopeful. they have lost everything. they have no more home and don't know where to go, and then you have the groups -- go ahead. >> into this scene there's talk of sending upwards of 40,000 runners to the new york city marathon. i should mention, congressman, we invited the mayor or a representative from the mayor's office to come on, and they

declined but they did give a statement saying our recovery efforts are on going and none will be impacted by the marathon. no resources will be reduced. sir, do you buy that? >> well, here's the problem with that. you've got to understand. the mayor has one of the most difficult jobs in the world, and i do respect that. however, there are people right now that have absolutely no heat. they are sitting still in the dark in their apartments and they have no food. my office has been getting calls that someone checked on a neighbor and found out they haven't eaten so they are bringing food over there so to say we have enough resources just isn't accurate. it's not true. there are still many people who have no idea where they are going to be living for the next 30 days and the city has not been able to give answers about where to find transitional housing so there's a lot of unanswers questions, and i think the optics on this, it goes to the heart of how people in staten island feel. we feel like no one understands us. >> let me ask you to stand by

for a movement i want to turn to scott stringer, the borough power. abuse of power, massive generators are providing electricity to a tent in central park, not in staten island. you initially supported the mayor edecision. have you changed your mind? >> i give mayor bloomberg and governor cuomo respect for their efforts. i believe in this case we have to be very cautious. as congressman grimm stated, staten island is suffering. breezy point, queens is suffering and let me tell you about lower manhattan. i was going yesterday build by building and people are suffering. you know what they need? they need generators, they need food, they need supplies. i think the prudent course of action. postpone the marathon. come back a different day. our first priority is to help people who lost their homes and missing loved ones and the people in manhattan, the

back now at 7:42. this morning on rossen reports, a warning to everyone trying to repair their homes in the wake of this storm. officials say contractors are preying on homeowners. today national investigative correspondent jeff rossen has more on that. jeff, good morning. >> reporter: hey, matt, good morning. look, a lot of you are hurting right now trying to put your homes back together. that makes you an easy target. you want a quick fix so you may hire the first company that comes to your door. it makes sense, but it could cost you big later. officials are warning unlicensed contractors, even scammers, could be flooding neighborhoods right now. sandy's sheer power caught on home video. >> oh, my gosh. >> reporter: now, the massive cleanup is under way, and investigators say unlicensed

contractors are coming out of the woodwork. hi, jeff rossen from nbc news. why did you tell us you were licensed and trained to remove trees? >> these guys already at work on the decimated homes of vulnerable storm victims. >> it's terrible. it's unconscionable behavior. >> reporter: frank van dyke is a veteran investigator with suffolk county's consumer affairs unit. >> this contractor is operating right over here. >> reporter: scanning for companies breaking the law in some of long island's hardest hit neighborhoods. >> hey, guys. checking home improvement licenses. >> reporter: this contractor is removing a giant tree from this home. dangerous work that requires a license, but the county has no record of him. >> i'm going to issue a violation. you can come in on monday. >> reporter: the homeowner told us she had no idea. >> did you know they were unlicensed when you hired them? >> they told us they were licensed. they should have a license, it's

law. >> reporter: because without one there's no requirements. contractors don't get a criminal background check and may not have insurance which means if they do a shoddy job you could be stuck. >> you don't know the level of expertise of the workers. they could damage your house more than you already have. >> we're taking a tree off somebody's house. >> reporter: this contractors admits he doesn't have a home improvement license, didn't know we needed one. >> we do rigging, massive rigging with the boom truck. that's what we're licensed and insured to do. >> reporter: but turns out there's no license for rigging either. he's actually an elevator repairman. you said your license and rigging, your company installs elevators. how do you explain that? why did you tell us you were licensed in rigging and trained to remove trees. >> just blocks away. >> consumers affairs, we're doing a licensing check. >> reporter: investigators find another unlicensed contractor. he insists the government database is wrong. >> i am licensed. >> when he checked there was no

license online for you or your company. >> i'll shoal you otherwise. >> reporter: said he'll show investigators proof the next day but didn't. >> do you have a business card? >> reporter: many contractors do play by the rules. frank checked this one on the roof. fully licensed. >> i'm glad somebody showed up to check my credentials, verify i'm licensed. >> reporter: what do you make of the unlicensed contractors? >> stick it to them. >> reporter: officials say some unlicensed contractors even walk down the street going door to door luring you in with low, low prices, and when your front yard looks like this or actually any of the homes on this block, you're desperate. how do you say no? >> it hurts. i am really in the hole. >> reporter: dorothy o'brien got a flier in her door in august for tree repair from this man, eric moyer. she says she paid him $1,600 in cash up front, but he never did the job.

>> they were only here one day. they never came back again. >> reporter: new jersey prosecutors say he was unlicensed and targeting the elderly and charged him with multiple counts of theft. he didn't return our calls for comment. >> they are liars. they lie to you. they are complete frauds. >> reporter: now with home after home looking like this, investigators fear it's open seas season. >> the consumers are so desperate that they will just hand the money away. >> reporter: now the contractors we met have a hearing next week. no previous violations against them, but officials say after storms like this contractor complaints spike. the best way to protect yourself, call your local consumer affairs department. even by phone they can quickly check if the company you're trying to hire is licensed. also like dorothy, never pay cash, and if you can get several estimates before hiring someone. >> such a fine line. people need help, but there are rules and regulations and laws. >> exactly.

we're calling him mr. ya. >> but this morning it's all about aerosmith. natalie's got a look at the headlines. >> all right. good morning again to you. good morning, everyone. federal officials will visit new york's staten island today which received a severe blow from hurricane sandy. nbc's andrea canning is there with more on the struggles facing the entire region. good morning, andrea. >> reporter: good morning, natalie. this is just the scene of total devastation. boats actually reached people's doorsteps here, and what makes this really sad is that 19 people are now confirmed dead here on staten island, including a mother whose two young children were washed away with the floodwaters. and to make matters worse, we just got off the phone with a family who is being displaced from the hotel to make way for new york city marathon runners because the marathon is on sunday, and we're hearing this story from other families as well, so that is only adding to the frustration. another area of frustration is gas lines. they are stretching for miles long. people are waiting for hours to get their gas.

drivers have been waiting for hours, often to learn there is no fuel left or that it is being rationed, and along the devastated jersey shore, residents are being allowed back into their neighborhoods only to find that in so many cases they are now homeless. there's a lot of debate about the decision to proceed with the new york city marathon on sunday. mayor michael bloomberg defends the decision saying the city needs the money that out-of-town visitors will spend this weekend, and he vows the marathon won't divert any resources as the city recovers from the superstorm. this weekend marks the end of daylight saving time for 2012, so before you go to sleep on saturday night here's the reminder to set your clocks and watches back one hour to standard time. blake shelton, who serves as one of the coaches on nbc's "the voice" was the big winner at last negotiate's country music association awards. took home entertainer of the year honors and two other trophies. blake's wife miranda lambert was also named female vocalist of the year.

images from this post-hurricane sandy. you can't help but be moved, heartsick a lot of times but a little bit hopeful, too. you see it happened after 9/11 and happens after a lot of these natural disasters when people rush in to help. natalie, why don't i start with you, just an enduring image for you. >> well, obviously we're seeing great pictures from across the area. here just national guard getting some muffins, fresh muffins, but, you know, twitter, the power of twitter, it has really demonstrated how much you can get the word out for people who need help, and in my town in hoboken it's been neighbor helping neighbor all along, people really communicating. well, some people here in battery park city, heather mcalister sent me a tweet and said we have brown bag meals to deliver to hoboken. she saw my reports, and she wanted to get them to hoboken and said how can i deliver. i said take them to city hall. she delivered amazing meals. also, a great man on twitter who has been following me, has a

brazilian restaurant here in the city, brought 300 meals to hoboken to help those people out. the more we can get those messages and people saying i have the resources, what can we do and how can i help? those are the meals delivered to hoboken yesterday. >> rescue workers carrying young people and people through the water. >> yeah. >> you know, i mean, look at that. you just see that and it's people self-lessly giving of themselves to make sure others are okay. >> and just to see, i mean, even from the air when i was in a helicopter seeing a front loader picking up a couple and their dog, and carrying them through the water in hoboken, and delivering them to safe dry ground. >> willie, you're from jersey. it's hard on everybody to see this at your home state. >> anybody who spent time at the jersey shore and saw the images that you brought us two mornings ago from the helicopter, these were the board walks, the roller coasters you rode as a kid. >> rode on those rides this past summer with my kids. it's heartbreaking. >> it's gone now. an image from new york's langone

hospital on that first night when the generators failed and the nicu nurses were carrying these premature babies by hand. they took them down ten stories and were bringing them out into the driving rain and the wind, manually ventilating them, and it's moments like that, it was completely life-affirming and made you realize we'll get through it. >> coney island, the aquarium there, the fish, the wildlife, taking care of the walruses. i mean, there's so many people who are going 24/7 throughout all of this, trying to help everyone. even our -- one of our stage managers here tara has been going up to the animal control and helping walk the dogs. a lot of people forget about those, you know, who really need some help. >> an folks want to figure out how can i make a difference? what can i do? and we've got this,concert tonight that benefits the american red cross. amazing talent helping out. it's going to be hosted by matt at 8:00. we've got bruce springsteen, of course, new jersey's favorite son, along with his other
